The course is limited to a maximum of 18 students.
Bacteria may alter cell morphology, cell metabolism, and gene transcription in response to environmental fluctuations, such as availability of carbon sources, oxygen, and nitrogen. Within the frame of the course students will grow Escherichia coli, one of the best investigated model organisms, under various, well defined conditions in fermenters. Subsequently, the proteome of each culture, representing the entire set of proteins expressed by a genome, will be analyzed and assigned to the external conditions.
